What is an EIN?

An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a nine-digit number the IRS assigns to a US business or nonprofit to identify it for tax purposes.

EIN stands for Employer Identification Number. It's a unique nine-digit ID issued by the US Internal Revenue Service to identify a business entity — corporations, partnerships, LLCs, and nonprofits — for federal tax filings. It's analogous to a Social Security Number, but for organizations.

Nonprofits use their EIN on tax filings (like Form 990) and donor receipts. Donors sometimes ask for it when they're claiming a deduction or when matching-gift programs need to verify the recipient. An organization that hasn't received an EIN cannot file federal taxes as that entity.

When Stripe verifies a business account, it asks for the EIN. CrowdCreate never sees or stores that — Stripe handles identity verification directly with the account holder.
