What is a 501(c)(3)?

A 501(c)(3) is a US tax-exempt charitable organization recognized by the IRS, eligible to receive donations that may be tax-deductible for the donor.

501(c)(3) refers to a section of the US Internal Revenue Code that defines a category of tax-exempt nonprofit organizations — charitable, religious, educational, scientific, and similar. A 501(c)(3) doesn't pay federal income tax on its mission-related income, and gifts to it can qualify as tax-deductible for the donor in the US.

An organization isn't a 501(c)(3) just because it operates like a nonprofit. The IRS has to grant the status — usually after the organization files Form 1023 (or 1023-EZ) and is approved. Only after approval can the organization correctly tell donors that gifts are tax-deductible.

CrowdCreate does not determine, verify, or grant 501(c)(3) status — that is between you and the IRS. We also don't issue tax-deductible receipts. If your organization is a 501(c)(3) and your donors expect deductible-gift acknowledgments, you handle that with your own records from Stripe.
